China Machado
NEW YORK - She was the first “non-caucasian” model on the cover of a fashion magazine and, with not discussion, she interpretes better that noboby else the essence of melting pot. China Machado’s life is a geographic Atlas: born in Hong Kong, from portogues father and indian mother, spent her youth in China, Argentina and Perù were she met Luis Miguel Dominguin just to jump with him in Europe. Her mannequin carreer begins in Paris, just as a joke, just becouse everybody said her to try the catwalk, just because she needed independence.
She attend “high society” and meets all, Givenchy, Errol Flynn, Picasso, Guggenheims and the whole Hollywood ‘till Richard Avedon who opens her the golden doors of that exclusive club of beauty composed by Dorian Leigh, Suzy Parker, Dovima, Carmen dell’Orefice and few others goddess.
China shows, before and better, that beauty is not perfection, that allure is a natural talent, that elegance cannot be obvious, that edges must be always crossed.
Today she is glad to come back on a photo set, as happened for Barney’s New York a couple of years ago. A success that is not afraid by the time passing and that is summed in the title of her recent auto-bioghraphy: “I didn’t think of myself as good-looking at all”.
