Serge Gainsbourg – everlasting style

2011 March 5
by Massimo Porcelli

PARIS – Serge Gainsbourg died 20 years ago, the 4th of march 1991, little more than sixty years old. The way he was, and the way he figured out, signed an undelible line of demarcation in our perception of  style, in general, and elegance in particolar.

Before Serge, flair, seduction, allure were reserved to man classically beautiful (Rubirosa, Gable, Brando, Sinatra, Montand) or dramatically powerful (Kennedy, Agnelli, Onassis). After Serge glamour becomes masculine and, in the middle of seventies, set the trend “he-is-not-beautiful-but-he-is-very-intriguing” that was fortunate for Pacino, Hoffmann, Sacks, Aznavour up to Pete Doherty and Jamie Hince.

After twenty years, I think that Gainsbourg’s style is still very, very persuasive and contemporary.
